Hierarchical Mixture Models for Nested Data Structures
نویسندگان
چکیده
A hierarchical extension of the finite mixture model is presented that can be used for the analysis of nested data structures. The model permits a simultaneous model-based clustering of lowerand higher-level units. Lower-level observations within higher-level units are assumed to be mutually independent given cluster membership of the higher-level units. The proposed model can be seen as a finite mixture model in which the prior class membership probabilities are assumed to be random, which makes it very similar to the grade-of-membership (GoM) model. The new model is illustrated with an example from organizational psychology.

Model Selection for Mixture Models Using Perfect Sample
We have considered a perfect sample method for model selection of finite mixture models with either known (fixed) or unknown number of components which can be applied in the most general setting with assumptions on the relation between the rival models and the true distribution. It is, both, one or neither to be well-specified or mis-specified, they may be nested or non-nested. We consider mixt...
متن کاملGenerating structure of latent variable models for nested data
Probabilistic latent variable models have been successfully used to capture intrinsic characteristics of various data. However, it is nontrivial to design appropriate models for given data because it requires both machine learning and domainspecific knowledge. In this paper, we focus on data with nested structure and propose a method to automatically generate a latent variable model for the giv...

Statistics has both optimistic and pessimistic faces, with the Bayesian perspective often associated with the former and the frequentist perspective with the latter, but with foundational thinkers such as Jim Berger reminding us that statistics is fundamentally a Janus-like creature with two faces. In creating one field out of two perspectives, one of the unifying ideas emphasized by Berger and...
متن کاملFuzzy Hierarchical Location-Allocation Models for Congested Systems
There exist various service systems that have hierarchical structure. In hierarchical service networks, facilities at different levels provide different types of services. For example, in health care systems, general centers provide low-level services such as primary health care services, while the specialized hospitals provide high-level services. Because of demand congestion in service networ...
متن کاملThe NESTOR Framework: How to Handle Hierarchical Data Structures
In this paper we study the problem of representing, managing and exchanging hierarchically structured data in the context of a Digital Library (DL). We present the NEsted SeTs for Object hieRarchies (NESTOR) framework defining two set data models that we call: the “Nested Set Model (NS-M)” and the “Inverse Nested Set Model (INSM)” based on the organization of nested sets which enable the repres...
